Day 1 Arrival at Sal airport Transfer to your hotel in Santa Maria Relaxing, swimming, walking on the beach, enjoy the sun …..

Day 2 Excursion to the salt pans in the crater of Pedra Lume (“swimming like in the Dead Sea”) and to Shark Bay, where the harmless baby lime sharks swim next to your feet. Overnight in Santa Maria.

Day 3 Flight to Sao Vicente and guided walk through the lively little harbour town of of Mindelo, with its colonial style houses and colorful markets (3 hrs). In the afternoon, optional private sightseeing tour around the island (extra).
Overnight in Mindelo.

Day 4 The ferry brings you to Santo Antao island, next island in your CapeVerde discovery roundtrip (1 hr. crossing). As the car climbs up the old mountain road, the landscape changes from desert into green. Guided walk along the Cova Crater and acacia forest to a lookout point (1h). Typical Cape Verdean lunch included. 2 nights in a small, nice hotel in the coastal village of Paul (optional eco- lodge with halfboard, extra charge).

Day 5 Charming hike on trails and paths in the green Valley of Paul, between terraced fields and thatched stone houses, (4 h ,+/- 450 m or 2 hours, +/- 150 m , at your choice). The Valley of Paul is well known all over Cape Verde for its tropical vegetation and mountain scenery. At the end of the hike, you will have lunch in a restaurant with typical local products (included).

Day 6 After breakfast, transfer to your next accomodation in the fishing village of Ponta do Sol. Ponta do Sol is located at the northeastern tip of the island. Hike on a donkey trail over the cliffs of the north coast. (about 1.5 h, +/- 150 hm). Enjoy fresh local fish for dinner! There may be some traditional capeverdean life music around tonight. Private accommodation with sea views in the fishing village of Ponta do Sol.

Day 7 Free day in Ponta do Sol. The small harbor gets very much alive when the fishermen bring in their catch in the morning.
In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing massage (included).

Day 8 Trip through the Ribeira Grande valley to the fishing village Cruzinha with a dive into the sea – or a beautiful walk over two side valleys of the Ribeira Grande (3 h, +/- 350 hm) – it’s you choice today. For more details ask your guide. Picnic included.

Day 9 Farewell to the island of Santo Antao, the ferry brings you back to Sao Vicente. Flight to Santiago island, the following destination of your capeverde discovery roundtrip. You will stay overnight in a small, nice hotel with pool in Cidade Velha. Cidade Velha is a small UNESCO world heritage site where the capeverdean creole culture started some 550 years ago.

Day 10 Trip to the center of the nearby Capeverdean capital Praia. There you can buy local delicacies on the bustling fruit and vegetable market. On the African market, you can do some haggling. In the afternoon, time to stroll through Cidade Velha, once an important Portuguese slave trading center. Today, you can enjoy your dinner at sunset in a charming atmosphere close to the sea.

Day 11 Flight to Fogo island. Dominated by the majestic volcano “Pico de Fogo”, the National Park of the Caldera is a world in itself. Impressive hike at the colorful crater of the latest eruption in 2014/2015 (3 h, +/- 280 m). Overnight in the National Park at the foot of the volcano. Dinner included.

Day 12 Drive down to the coast and leisure in the pretty colonial town of Sao Filipe. Overnight in a small colonial style hotel in Sao Filipe or hotel ****. Dinner included.

Day 13 Flights to Praia and onward flight to the island of Boa Vista, that entices with white beaches and dunes. The perfect place to relax and review your exciting discovery roundtrip across the Capeverde Islands. Small hotel or appartement in first line to the beach in Sal Rei.

Day 14 – Beach day – also beckon interesting excursions

Round trip “SODADE” – extension Boa Vista

Boa Vista as a beach and dune island is the right choice for some relaxing days at the white beaches. With its reefs surrounding the island, it also interesting for divers. In addition to bathing and beach hiking, various island excursions are offered on site.

In spring you may have the chance to see whales on a boat trip.

From July to September, turtles can be observed during egg laying.

Day 1 Arrival at Sal airport and transfer to your small hotel in Santa Maria, 5-7 minute walk to the sandy beach. Bed/Breakfast.

Day 2 Flight to Sao Vicente. Private guided tour of Mindelo (approx 3 hrs.). Afternoon at leisure or optional sightseeing tour on the island. (Extra). Overnight in a small city hotel in the harbour town of Mindelo. Your guide can recommend you a place for dinner with Capeverdean live music.

Day 3 Ferry to Santo Antao (1 hr. Crossing). Hike through the Cova Crater and subsequent descent into the valley of Paul (3.5 h, + 150 m, – 700 m). The Valley of Paul is certainly one of the most beautiful valleys of Cabo Verde islands. Lunch included. Dinner and overnight stay in private accommodation in the seaside village of Paul.

Day 4 Beautiful hike on trails and paths between tropical vegetation and thatched cottages, in the green valley of Paul. (4 h, +/- 450 hm). After the hike, lunch in a restaurant with typical local products (lunch included). Dinner and overnight in private accommodation in the coastal village of Paul.

Day 5 After breakfast, transfer to your next accomodation in the fishing village of Ponta do Sol, at the northeastern tip of the island. Hike on a donkey trail over the cliffs of the north coast. (about 3.5 h, +/- 350 hm). Enjoy fresh local fish for dinner! Private accommodation with sea views in the fishing village of Ponta do Sol.

Day 6 Today, you do as the locals and just take time for leisure: in the morning you can watch the fishermen bring in their catch. In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing massage (included).

Day 7 Beautiful hike over two valleys of the Ribeira Grande (3 h, +/- 350 hm). Picnic included. Then transfer to Porto Novo in the south of the island. Dinner and overnight in Hotel ****.

Day 8 Times ago, water was abundant in the nowadays dry south of Santo Antão – as the dry river-system of Ribeira das Patas witnesses. From there, a trail leads up to the hidden valley of Altomira. (3.5 hours + 250 m, – 400 m or vice versa). After this walk there to say goodbye to Santo Antão, the ferry brings us back to São Vicente. Overnight in Hotel in Mindelo.

Day 9 Transfer to Sao Vicente airport and flight to Sal.

Variant SAL: 6 nights in Santa Maria, with breakfast included in a small hotel near the beach or in self catering apartment first line to the beach. Santa Maria is famous for its huge sandy beach, more than 5 kilometers long. There are beach restaurants and bars as well as some nice open air music and dancing bars for the evening.

Day 12 Possibility of a private excursion to the Salinas in the volcanic crater of “Pedra Lume” (swimming like in the “Dead Sea”) and to Shark Bay, the kindergarten of baby lemon sharks.

Day 15, Transfer to Sal airport (SID) for your international flight home. Good-bye Cabo Verde Islands!

Travel program “Windward Islands – Hiking in Cape Verde Barlavento”

Day 1 Arrival at Sal Airport and transfer to your hotel in Santa Maria, a few minutes to the beach.

Day 2 Leisure time at the beautiful sandy beach of Santa Maria. Later on, flight to São Vicente, the island of music and culture. Overnight in Mindelo town center.

Day 3 City Tour in Mindelo with your personal guide (3 hrs.). Colonial style houses, visit of the fish market, african market and some hidden bar. Your guide can give you some interesting tips for the afternoon and the evening.

Day 4 Relaxed island tour to the highest elevation of the island, then visit some spots and villages on the east coast. Have a swim in a sheltered bay. Local bars and typical restaurants on the way.

Day 5 Ferry to Santo Antao (1 hr. crossing). Your local guide will fetch you from the harbour. As the car climbs up the old mountain road, the landscape changes from desert into green.
Option a.) Small hike to a viewpoint (1,5 h, + 150 hm) and spectacular views from the panoramic road. In a small village bar, the landlady will serve you a typical Cape Verdean lunch.
Option b.) Guided walk through the Cova Crater and down into the tropical green Valley of Paul. (Walking time 3 ½ – 4 hours, +130m, -650m).
Transfer to your small hotel in Paul valley where your luggage will already be waiting for you.

Day 6 Picturesque hike on trails and paths through the green valley of Paul. You will walk between sugar cane, coffe fields, papaya, mango trees and thatched little stone houses. On today’s hike, you will get a lot of insights into the daily life of the local farmers and population. (Walking time 4 h, +/- 450 m). Short transfer and dinner in your accommodation in Paul Valley included.

Day 7 Impressing hike on a donkeypath – above the cliffs of the north coast – until the fishing village of Cruzinha. The return trip to Ponta do Sol is very scenic. (Walking time 5 hours + 600 m / – 700 m). Transfers and baggage transfers to Ponta do Sol.

Day 8 Free day in Ponta do Sol The small harbor gets very much alive when the fishermen bring in their catch in the morning. Maybe fancy a relaxing massage in the afternoon? Your guide can arrange for it. Night in Ponta do Sol.

Day 9 Starting from a small village in a side valley of the Ribeira Grande, we hike up and down a saddle with great panoramic views. (3.5 hours +/- 350 m), may optionally be extended to 4,5 h, +/-450 hm.

Day 10 Climbing up from Coculi to Corda (4 hours + 750 m). Your driver will subsequently bring you to Porto Novo. Hotel 4****, dinner included.

Day 11 Times ago, water was abundant in the nowadays dry south of Santo Antão – as the dry river-system of Ribeira das Patas witnesses. From there, a trail leads up to the hidden valley of Altomira. Hiking and trekking from tropical valleys to Fogo fire-mountain

Nature and hiking enthusiasts will be thrilled by this trekking trip over 4 capeverde islands. On the scenic, spectacular Santo Antão mountain range, we hike through villages where life has hardly changed in the last hundred years, and stay in private pensions of local families. Of course, Fogo is also a part of the tour. Fogo means fire and there is still volcanic activity on Fogo island. We will hike over the crater of the recent eruption (2014/15) and as a highlight climb the big volcano, the Pico de Fogo.

By the way, Funaná, a cheerful, rhythmic, Cape Verdean music style with African influence, gave the name to this trekking tour.

Travel program Capeverde Trekking “FUNANÁ”

Day 1 Arrival at São Vicente airport, transfer to hotel and overnight in town hotel in the harbor town of Mindelo.

Day 2 Hike along the east coast of São Vicente – wild sea and secluded beaches.

Day 3 The morning ferry brings you to the island of Santo Antão (1 hour crossing). Your local guide will fetch you from the harbour. Transfer up to the mountains, walk through Cova crater and up to a top from where you can have magnificent views. In a small village, you will have a country-style lunch with a local family. From there we will start our hike down into a side valley of the Ribeira Grande. (+ 150 hm, – 900 hm, 5 h).
Overnight stay in a private family pension down in the valley, dinner included.

Day 4 The next day of your Capeverde trekking tour leads us across valleys and 2 passes. Small farms scattered around here and there line our path. (+ 700m, – 600m, 4 h).
Dinner and overnight in private accommodation in the charming village of Chã de Igreja.

Day 5 On an old donkey trail we hike along the cliffs of the north coast, always a soft sea breeze in the face. On our way we admire interesting basalt walls, the abandoned village of Aranhas and we shall visit a small village school. (+/- 850 hm, 5 h walking time)
Picnic, dinner, overnight in the fishing village of Ponta do Sol.

Day 6 Free day in Ponta do Sol – time to relax and watch the fishemen coming back to the harbour. Or do you fancy a massage?
There are restaurants with life music in the evening.

Day 7: Transfer to the famous Valley of Paul. Hike on little paths, between sugar cane, tropical fruit trees and thatched cottages. Here and there, farmers are working hard on their terraced fields and some small brooks are flowing. Have a cup of freshly toasted coffee with a local family. (+/- 500 hm, 4 h walking time)
Dinner, overnight in a nice private accommodation in Paul.

Day 8 On ancient paths, that are still used by the locals, we climb up from Paul Valley to Pico da Cruz, the second highest elevation of Santo Antao island. From there, we can overlook the southern part of Santo Antao and discover Sao Vicente with the bay of Mindelo on the other side of the sea channel. (+ 1000 hm, -200 hm, 5 h).
Dinner and overnight in the coastal town of Porto Novo.

Day 9 Once upon a time, water was abundant in the nowadays dry south of Santo Antão. The deeply buried dry river system of “Ribeira das Patas” still testifies these ancient times. As we slowly climb further up the ridge, a fantastic lunar landscape is revealed to our eyes. With a farmer’s family, living in the middle of nowhere, we will enjoy some tea or coffee. Over the “Bordeira de Norte”, a true architectural wonder, we descend back to the valley again. (+ 650 hm, – 850 hm, 5,5 h).
The evening ferry takes us to São Vicente. Overnight in Mindelo.

Day 10 Fly to the island of Santiago and transfer to your hotel in Cidade Velha (UNESCO world heritage site). Cidade Velha has been a hub of Portuguese slavery for centuries. At sunset dinner, you can experience the enchanting atmosphere of today’s tranquil place.

Day 11 Flight to Fogo, transfer to Cha das Caldeiras and hike over the colorful volcano crater of the Pico Pequenho, which erupted in 1995 and 2014/15. (+/- 280 m, 3.5 h)
Dinner and overnight in private accommodation in Cha das Caldeiras, Fogo National Park – at the foot of the big volcano, the Pico de Fogo.

Day 12 Early ascent to the volcano “Pico de Fogo” (2.829m asl). As from a huge dune, we glide down again through the volcanic ash (+/- 1.100 hm, 6 h walking time). Optionally also hike up to the caldera border possible, with grandios glances at the volcano.
Lunch, dinner, overnight Cha das Caldeiras.

Day 13 Descend on an earth path from the Caldera to the north coast, through abundant tropical and subtropical vegetation. The sea shimmers in the distance below us.
Dinner and overnight in São Filipe with it’s colonial style houses.

Day 14 Flight back to Santiago island.
Hotel in Praia and time to visit the Capeverdean capital.
Late in the evening, transfer to Praia airport for your flight home

Travel Program Cape Verde Highlights Hiking-Roundtrip over 5 Cabo Verde Islands – fascinating nature, hiking, beach and culture

Day 1, Sat: Via Sal (SID) or Lisbon (LIS) to Sao Vicente (VXE). Arrival at the island of Sao Vicente, transfer to hotel and overnight in the harbor town Mindelo.

Day 2, Sun: Island Tour in Sao Vicente. Enjoy the view from Monte Verde, the island’s highest elevation and have a refreshing swim in a sheltered bay.
Overnight in Mindelo.

Day 3, Mon: Ferry to Santo Antao and transfer up into the mountains. Hike through the Cova Crater and down into the Paul Valley (- 700 m, + 150 m, 3.5 h).
Dinner / B & B in a private pension in Paul.

Day 4, Tue: Hike through the tropical green Valley of Paul. (+ / – 450 m, 4 hours walking time, can be extended to 6 hours). Dinner/breakfast in Paul Valley.

Day 5: Wed: Hike on an old donkey path from Ponta do Sol to Cruzinha, along the cliffs of the north coast. (+ / – 800 m, 5 h)

Day 6, Thu: Day off in Ponta do Sol. Watch the local fishermen when they bring in their catch, or enjoy a relaxing massage.

Day 7, Fri: Scenic mountain climb from the Ribeira to the Highlands. You will enjoy many spectacular views and walk in diverse landscapes (+1300 m, 5 h).
Dinner / BB Local Hotel in Porto Novo.

Day 8, Sat: Ferry to Mindelo and guided tour around the charming colonial style town. Learn about its interesting history, visit the market and the fish market and enjoy some coffee in a unique local bar. City Hotel in Mindelo.

Day 9, Sun: Flight to the island of Santiago. Today you hike through the former slave valley of Ribeira Grande. Your destination is the small coastal town of Cidade Velha, UNESCO World Heritage Site and the ancient capital of the Cape Verde Islands. The small coastal town has been a center of Portuguese slavery for centuries. (- 250 m, 2.5 h). B & B in a nice hotel with pool in Cidade Velha.

Day 10, Mon: Visit to the capital Praia, plateau and African market. BB in Cidade Velha

Day 11, Tue: Flight to the island of Fogo, transfer to Cha das Caldeiras and hike over the new volcano crater of the Pico Pequenho, which broke out in 2014. (+/- 280 m, 3.5h). Dinner/ B&B in private accommodation in the National Park at the foot of “Pico de Fogo”.

Day 12, Wed: Early morning ascent to the volcano “Pico de Fogo” (2.829m a.s.l.). As from a huge dune, we glide back down through the volcanic ashes. Lunch and dinner included. (+/- 1,100 m, 6 hours walking time).

Day 13, Thu: Descent to Mosteiros on the north cost of Fogo. We cross acacia woodland, sisal agaves, orange and coffee plantations. Interesting ride along the coast, past lava flows, to Sao Filipe. BB guesthouse in Sao Filipe.

Day 14, Fri: Flight to Sal, overnight at Santa Maria.

Day 15, Sat: Time to relax or take a hike along the beautiful, long sandy beach of Santa Maria. You may use your room until departure. Late in the evening, transfer to the airport (Feel like a beach extension…?)

Day 16, Sun: Arrival at home

Santo Antao belongs to Cape Verde – Barlavento (Northern Islands)

Santo Antao is a real hiking and trekking paradise. The island provides an endless labyrinth of paths through bizarre landscapes. Huge canyons and valleys, steep coastlines and lonely villages, lunar landscapes and tropical green valleys are good reasons for the fascination of the island. With an area of 779 km², Santo Antão is the second largest island in the archipelago of Cabo Verde and offers a number of the most beautiful hiking tours in Cape Verde.

In many places on Santo Antao Island, time seems to have stopped. Locals are crossing our way, they live in the mountains or are on their way to their terraced fields. We often hear the invitation “Entrá!” – come in! May it be only for a small chat with the friendly and communicative country population.

SANTO ANTAO – the Original Cape Verde

The island of Santo Antao is a holiday destination for people who love hiking or want know the original “Cabo Verde”.

Santo Antão is the most northwestern island in Cape Verde Barlavento. It was populated in the 17th century when European immigrants brought African and Creole slaves to the island.

In the northeast of the island, where the trade winds moisten the mountain regions, there are several river valleys, so-called “Ribeiras”. The rivers shrink to a trickle in the dryer season, while in a strong rainfall they swell visibly in minute intervals. Then they separate villages from the outside world. Little by little, bridges are built in order to avoid this inconvenience.

A labyrinth of paths connects the villages and hamlets of Santo Antao. For centuries, they have been serving the locals to reach their terraced fields, which are often situated in dizzying heights. Today just as in former times, the farmers work on their land with hoes.

Holiday destination SANTO ANTAO

Santo Antão is THE Cape Verdean island for hikers and lovers of nature. During the last years, a rural tourism has slowly established on the island. It is predominately important to us in VIP Tours Cabo Verde to involve the locals in tourism and thus to offer our visitors authentic encounters and experiences.

Accommodations in the hiking areas are mainly private retreats, but there are also some nice, smaller hotels in local style and with swimming pool.

Santo Antão can be reached by ferry from the island of São Vicente and it makes sense to combine Santo Antao with a visit to Mindelo.

Be guest in Paul Valley

The Valley of Paul on the island of Santo Antão is perhaps the most beautiful valley of the Cape Verde Islands. Tropical fruits such as mango, papaya, bread, sugar cane, bananas and yams are growing all around. Even coffee is cultivated in the slightly higher regions.

The so-called “Grogue”, a highly concentrated sugar cane schnapps is produced in Santo Antão in a very traditional way and is famous all over Cape Verde islands. If you visit Santo Antao between March and July, you will probably have the opportunity to watch the production and taste the newly distilled grogue.

If you prefer it individually, come and spend a few hiking days on Santo Antão in an idyllic place in Paul Valley. We will take you on some beautiful and interesting walks in the closer and wider surroundings. And if you feel like it, we organize a barbecue or a small party together with our Cape Verdean neighbors.

La Palma Highlights
Nature paradise La Palma – Hiking on the “Isla Bonita”

In June, when the slopes around the Roque de los Muchachos shine in a bright yellow sea of flowers, the villages celebrate their festivals and the blue sea invites you to swim, then it is especially beautiful on La Palma Island. Many years of island experience on site with hundreds of beautiful hiking days have created this “favorite hiking trip”. It is peppered with scenic highlights and spiced with little island stories. Our journey takes us to the most diverse landscapes and the most beautiful and interesting places of the island of La Palma.

Program La Palma Highlights

1st week:

Day 1 – Welcome to la Palma! Transfer from the airport to our accommodation in Los Llanos, on the sunny side of the island. Dinner in a local restaurant.

Day 2 – Ascend to the extinct volcano of Pico Birigoyo. We walk through pine forest and with first interesting views over the island of La Palma. 3 ½ h, +/- 550 m
Dinner in a beach restaurant in Puerto de Tazacorte. Maybe you feel like taking a “welcome bath” in the sheltered bay before?

Day 3 – Circular hike in the immense crater basin of the “Caldera de Taburiente”, across pine forest, the Taburiente river, canyons and gorges. 6.5 h, + 200 m, – 800 m. Dinner included.

Day 4 – At leisure – for example, relaxing at the pool or beach, stroll through the old town-center of Los Llanos, excursion to Santa Cruz de La Palma, guided mountain bike tour, boat trip to the dolphins … Just ask your guide.

Day 5 – In the northwest of La Palma, in La Zarza, enigmatic petroglyphs of the Canarian aborigines were discovered, which lived until about 500 years ago in the Stone Age. After an excursion into this mystical past we walk on small paths over the north coast in the nature reserve of Guelguen. 3 h, – 300 m, + 350 m

Day 6 – In 1971, the last volcano erupted in the south of La Palma: the volcano Teneguía. A real lunar landscape forms a fascinating contrast to the blue sea. At the end of our hike, we can take a refreshing dip in the sea. In the neighboring salt pans, pure ecological sea salt is produced according to an old family tradition. 3,5 h, + 80 m, – 700 m

Day 7 – At leisure, dinner for sunset next to the sea

Day 8 – Leisure time and transfer to the airport or extension

2nd week:

Day 8 – at leisure, dinner together

Day 9 – Surrounded by the evergreen heather trees and Myrica Faya, we walk up to Roque Niquiomo and further to Refugio El Pilar, a traditional picnic area in the pine forest. On a clear day we can see the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera on the way. 5 h, + 950 m.

Day 10 – From El Jesus on the west side, we start our ascent to the upper crater rim of the Caldera de Taburiente. Our way leads us to the famous observatories at the Roque de los Muchachos, the highest point of the island La Palma with 2426 m above sea level. Again and again, fantastic views into the huge crater basin open up. Far below lies the sea. 5 h, + 1100 m. Dinner included.

Day 11 – At leisure

Day 12 – The big volcano route – from Refugio El Pilar to Fuencaliente: 6,5 h, + 800 m, – 1300 hm. Dinner included

Day 13 – Change of accomodation to the beach resort of Los Cancajos near the island’s capital Santa Cruz. On the way there we make a detour to the famous little pilgrimage church of the Virgin of the Snow in Las Nieves. Leisure time in the afternoon.

Day 14 – Excursion to the northeast of La Palma and hike in the laurel forest, the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of “Los Tilos”. Dinner included.

Day 15 – : Leisure time and transfer to the airport (for your return flight).

Our accommodations in La Palma:

Day 1 to 12 we live in Los Llanos de Aridane, on the sunny side of the island, in a pretty family apartment complex with tropical garden and small pool – near the Plaza, where we can end the hiking day under laurel trees – close to the center and quiet.

Our apartments – all overlooking the garden – have a kitchenette or kitchen, where we can prepare our breakfast in the morning. In the neighboring house is a small supermarket and a bar, which is open from 6 o’clock in the morning.

The last two days we will spend in the beach and seaside resort of Los Cancajos, an ideal starting point for a trip to the historic capital of the island, Santa Cruz de La Palma, as well as to the UNESCO protected laurel forest of “Los Tilos”.
